The old mine in Roxbury

This saturday morning Me, Jim and Mike went to explore the remains of an old iron mine and processing center. Built in 1863, it was a full scale medival operation that separated iron from the abundant quartz rock. For reasons unknow, the operation closed in 1875, but the bulidings as well as the many miles of underground mines still remain. Sadly access to the mine is blocked off. Probably for the better...

Playing nails at Jill's house

This is how to play nails, the greatest redneck game ever. You take turns trying to completely hit in the opponents' nail; the winner being the one with the last nail standing. First, you get a stump of wood and each competitor nails a large nail about a half inch into it. Then you take turns throwing a hammer up in the air and trying to catch it. If you flip it up and catch it, you get one shot at sinking your opponents nails. If you throw it under your leg, you get two, behind the back - three, and four if you flip it over the shoulder. You must always be holding a beer in your hand as well as catch the hammer by the rubber part.

The sand mandala at the Uconn health center

I went to see a sand mandala being created by a group of monks at the uconn health center cafeteria. They were working on it the whole week and were almost done with it when i saw it. This friday at 5 pm it will be destroyed in an intricate ceremony. Even the deity syllables will be removed in a specific order, along with the rest of the geometry until at last the mandala will be dismantled. The sand will then be collected in a jar which is then wrapped in silk and transported to a river (or any place with moving water), where it is released back into nature. The same materials are never used twice.
